Janus 's Two Faces: Looking Back and Looking Forward

                                                              Byoung-man Jeon, Ph.D.
                                                                   President, KATE
                                               Professor, Chonbuk National University

Janus, a Roman God of doorways and beginnings, is usually represented as having a head with two faces looking in opposite directions: one for the sunset and one for the rising sun. Like Janus, for whom the first month of the year was named, KATE in 2005 is looking in the opposite directions: one for KATE 's past 40 years and one for its future.
KATE 2005 International Conference will hold its 40th annual event, entitled "ELT at the Crossroads: 40 Years of Research, Teaching, and Service. " In those years we have had great achievement by becoming the leading society of all ELT-related fields in Korea.  During the long journey we were faced with crisis and confusion, sometimes. However, we have accomplished many things, contributing to disseminating academic theories on English language education and sharing ideas of applying them to real classroom situations. Still, there are many things to be done. Now is the time that we should take a closer look at what we have accomplished for the last 40 years and then move step by step to the direction we have chosen to rejuvenate KATE.

The first step we took to achieve our goal was 2005 KATE Winter SIG Seminar/Workshop. For the 4th Joint SIG we have designed programs to provide updated information about current issues about English language education and to offer more practical programs. ELT Methodology session, for example, mainly consists of presentations of secondary school teachers who developed programs for reading and writing in class. Yet, 2005 KATE SIG will be highlighted by a presentation of the outcome of a research project, requested by KICE and conducted by KATE staff members, which sets forth possible practical skills to help secondary school English teachers improve their evaluation specialty.

In June 24-25, KATE will hold its 40th conference at Korea University, inviting scholars and teachers from Korea and abroad who will be assets in the celebratory event that we have long been waiting for. I simply ask all KATE members to join and commemorate this special occasion. It would be wonderful to see you at 2005 KATE International Conference as well as 2005 KATE SIG. I believe your affections for KATE
